Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction

The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction promotes innovative approaches to sustainable construction mainly through regional and global Awards competitions and international Forums. Architectural excellence and enhanced quality of life are integral parts of the Holcim Foundation's vision of sustainable construction.

The purpose of the Holcim Foundation is thus to promote sustainable construction by enabling the exchange of ideas and innovative approaches, and recognizing outstanding achievements through awards to reach a greater level of sustainability in the built environment.

The Advisory Board of the Holcim Foundation ensures that the activities of the Holcim Foundation are conducted in accordance with current interpretations of sustainable construction. It shapes the Holcim Foundation’s activities by identifying the architectural, scientific, cultural, and policy concerns that should be integrated into its initiatives.

The Holcim Foundation is supported by, but independent of the commercial interests of Holcim, one of the world’s leading suppliers of cement, aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel), concrete and construction-related services.

Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction

The Holcim Awards are an international competition for projects that embody approaches to meet the present-day needs for housing and infrastructure without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs in times to come.

The Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction promote innovation in sustainable construction through a series of regional and global competitions.

The Holcim Awards are held in partnership with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA; Tongji University, Shanghai, China; the University of São Paulo, Brazil and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, South Africa. The universities define the evaluation criteria of the competition and lead the independent juries.

Juries on regional and on global level include independent experts of international stature engaged in the sustainable development of society, building processes, construction materials, and building projects.
