  Sustainable Development
CSI as an OH&S learning platform
Description
As a member of the Cement Sustainability Initiative, Holcim participated in the development of industry guidelines on standard, cross-company systems to measure, monitor and report health and safety performance.
Objectives
The objectives of the initiative were to ensure that all CSI members gather OH&S data in the same way so that information could be consolidated into a single report of incident analysis, frequency and trends. This would provide individual members with comparison points for further improvements.
Activities
As part of the guidelines development, the sharing of information about OH&S management tools used by CSI members is common practice, to help all improve. For example, the learning experience of Holcim Switzerland was shared with our peers. The initiative consists of a web-based training tool for systematically inducting new employees and contractors into safe Holcim work practices. Successful completion of the online course results in certification of individuals, whose names are entered into a central database which all Holcim plants in Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany can access.
Results
The simplicity and effectiveness of the program ensures that only certified personnel are allowed onsite and helps foster a safety culture while increasing knowledge. Holcim plans to encourage all Group companies to adopt such a methodology. And now, by sharing this success with our peers, the program has been recommended for wider industry take-up amongst CSI members.
