Objectives and activities
In the Philippines, the local Exco elevated safety to a high priority level in early 2007 and made it one of the company’s four strategic initiatives. As a result, a full-time, dedicated Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) specialist was hired, a practical safety strategy developed and the workforce engaged through a number of sustainable initiatives. These initiatives included the launching of the “Ligtas Panalo” (Safety Wins) competition among employees and contractors, and additional training.

Results
Although still in its early days, the safety program has shown encouraging results. Out of 1,400 employees, only one suffered a lost-time injury in 2007 compared to an average of five per year over the last four years.
