The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a coalition of 175 international companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development via the three pillars of economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.

Holcim joined the WBCSD in 1999 and has been an active member since the beginning. CEO Markus Akermann is our Council Member. Liaison delegate is the Head of Holcim's Corporate Industrial Ecology division - Patrick Verhagen. In addition, Holcim has seconded employees to the WBCSD to assist its work program. We also maintain an active voice in three Council projects - Energy & Climate, Accountability, and Sustainable Livelihoods - and are part of the communications forum.

Holcim sees many benefits to its WBCSD membership. Most importantly, however, is the opportunity to assist in the development of WBCSD policies as well as challenge our own SD performance in a public setting in association with like-minded peers. As a founding member of the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), we are also able to look at the issues from our own industry perspective.
