Description
More than 20 years of illegal small-scale quarrying in a national forest reserve of Thailand had resulted in devastation of forests and denuded lands. Rehabilitation will give a new economic lease on life to the people living nearby and conserve the natural biodiversity on which their future depends.

Activities
Thanks to extensive engagement efforts, stakeholders see that the project promises a host of economic and environmental benefits to all concerned. Reforestation and habitat preservation will promote conservation of natural flora and fauna. Facilities for eco-tourism will encourage natural resource preservation, while at the same time creating sustainable livelihoods for the local population. Rural job and income generation will no longer be reliant on illegal quarrying practices.
Meanwhile, demonstration sites on environmental protection, such as constructed wetlands for water purification and a solid waste separation and recycling center, will spur eco-efficiency. Training in sustainable agriculture and aquaculture practices will help to conserve natural resources and preserve the region's fertility for coming generations.

Results
Rehabilitating this degraded site will provide an important benchmark for quarrying and mining operations that occur in or near forested areas rich in biodiversity. It will also demonstrate the opportunities provided by public-private partnerships in meeting the needs of local stakeholders and the fragile environments they call home.
