| Our stakeholder engagement approach |
Description To assess the impacts, opportunities and risks of its operations, products and services, a business must engage with, learn from, and understand the needs and expectations of its stakeholders. To build on the many years of practical experience by our Group companies, a process model of stakeholder engagement has been development for use across our worldwide operations. |
Objectives
The model aims to assist Holcim Group companies in preparing, implementing and evaluating their local stakeholder engagement strategies. Its objective is to deliver a consistent approach to the building of stakeholder relationships.
Activities The model details, step-by-step, the cyclical process of engaging with stakeholders. Each of the eight steps contains basic principles, tools and mechanisms to apply. A guidebook was developed to explain the model and its tools to managers directly involved in stakeholder processes. This is supplemented by online support materials, such as templates, matrices and good practice examples, with in-person support available when required. A quick reference pocket guide was also developed to engage a broader internal audience to the value of stakeholder engagement as well as reinforce the need for a common approach. |
Results The model has been successfully applied by many Holcim Group companies. However, it is important to recognize that no ‘one size fits all’ approach is advocated. The model simply describes a recommended process to stakeholder engagement and offers varied implementation tools for use in the field. Within this broad framework, individual Holcim operations analyze their needs and those of their stakeholders and apply a ‘best fit’ to their particular circumstances. The continuous cycle of learning and improvement advocated by the process model enables the engagement to become richer over time, while delivering more and better outcomes. The relationships we develop with our stakeholders are stronger as a result and our license to operate more secure. |
