Ready-mix concrete initiatives in Europe |
Description
Holcim’s 864 ready-mix concrete (RMX) operations worldwide assess their environmental performance according to the PEP self-assessment questionnaire methodology. This system enables tracking of operational performance as well as the detailing of improvement plans and initiatives. Two Group companies – Romania and Spain – are profiled here to describe their approach to environmental improvement programs.

Holcim Romania
Objectives: In 2001, Holcim Romania set its sights on ISO14,001 certification for each of its RMX sites. Introducing the concept of ‘Environmentally Friendly Concrete Plants’ to stakeholders, the focus was on four priority areas – recycling of fresh concrete; water protection; dust control; and noise reduction.
Activities: Old plants were refurbished, installing latest environmental technology such as bag filters for dust control, closed loop water recycling, and noise abatement systems. New mobile equipment was purchased with a focus on lower emissions and increased safety for drivers and operators. And each received a much needed Holcim-branded facelift for ‘visual impact’.
Results: To year-end 2005, more than CHF47.5 million had been invested in this ongoing initiative, with another CHF15 million earmarked for refurbishment of the remaining plants over the next five years. As well as ISO14,001 certification, the plants are also OHSAS18,001 and ISO9,001-certified, confirming the benefits of an integrated approach to harness improvement potential.

Holcim Spain
Objectives: In 2001, Holcim Spain decided to use its PEP site self-assessments to thoroughly review its RMX environmental management procedures to ensure their integration into ongoing business planning.
Activities: Following PEP self-assessments, all data was reviewed and validated, including site sampling by area delegates and environmental specialists from corporate HQ. Complementary environmental activity reports then helped in the development of action plans.
Results: Performance benchmarks set for 2005 through 2008 are being achieved. Priority action areas included legal compliance, resources management (recycling/recovery systems), waste management (storage buildings), fuels and chemicals storage and improvement to fugitive dust emission control. Embedding the approach into existing business plans is key to ensuring periodic review and improvement.
