CEMEFI recognizes Ecoltec, a Holcim Apasco subsidiary, for its program "Sustainable Management of Scrap Tires"
Comunicación Externa, August 12, 2008 - • From 2000 to 2007, nearly 6 million tires were disposed of through coprocessing at Holcim Apasco cement plants.
• Through tire coprocessing, the cement company has reduced its traditional fuel consumption by 4.8%.
• This alternative has also helped prevent the spread of disease caused by the dengue mosquito.

Mexico City, August 12, 2008 - Holcim Apasco was notified by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI) that its subsidiary Ecoltec has been awarded special recognition for its “Sustainable Management of Scrap Tires” program, one of its major initiatives for environmental conservation.

Through this program, the cement plant gives the community at large an environmentally sustainable and safe alternative for disposal of scrap tires generated in Mexico, helping prevent the serious environmental and public health problems caused by inadequate scrap tire disposal.

Holcim Apasco, in keeping with its commitment to sustainable development, and seeking to help resolve some of the problems generated by poor waste management in Mexico created subsidiary Ecoltec to provide environmental solutions through specialized, professional and environmentally safe services for comprehensive waste management. The initiative has been underway since 2000 without interruption and in the past three years has intensified through collaboration agreements signed with related groups.

"From 2000 to 2007, nearly 6 million tires have been coprocessed in Holcim Apasco cement plants, which has translated into a 4.8% reduction at our factories in use of traditional fuels such as fuel oil and petroleum coke," said Francisco Toscano, Ecoltec Commercial director.Through collection and coprocessing of tires in cement kilns, Holcim Apasco aims to reduce consumption of traditional energy (fossil fuels) at cement plants, reduce the spread of diseases such as dengue in local communities, eliminate clandestine dumps and optimize landfill use.Through these activities, Holcim Apasco helps reduce fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and provides the necessary infrastructure for proper management of scrap tires.
