McDonald’s Lime has a proud history of lime production stretching back more than a hundred years. It is New Zealand’s largest manufacturer of burnt and hydrated lime products and distributes its products throughout the North Island and exports around the Pacific basin.
From its quarry in the rich limestone deposits at Waitomo, McDonald's produces various sizes of limestone chip for industry.
McDonald’s Lime, which is 72% owned by Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd, has four product categories:
Burnt Lime
Burnt Lime (calcium oxide CaO), commonly known as quick lime or unslaked lime, is supplied in four different size gradings, ranging from less than 1mm to 25mm depending on the application. McDonald’s ability to completely burn off carbon dioxide enables them to produce the optimum quality burnt lime. This finds ready markets in steel manufacturing, gold mining, road stabilisation, paper manufacturing, and sludge stabilisation within New Zealand and in export markets around the Pacific.
Hydrated Lime
Hydrated Lime (Ca(OH)2) or slaked lime is a fine white powder used primarily for water treatment, building materials, sugar refining, and leather tanning. It is packed in 20kg multiwall paper bags or transported in bulk by road tanker.
Agricultural Lime
Agricultural lime (calcium carbonate CaCO3), also known as lime and ground limestone, is produced by grinding limestone to less than 2mm. It is sold in bulk for ground and aerial spreading, bulk bags for industry, and in bags for the home gardener.
Ground Calcium Carbonate
McDonald's produces a high grade fine lime supplement "Calcimate" for the dairy industry and an industrial fine lime used as a filler in the concrete and asphalt industries. Products are sold in bulk, bulk bags and 25kg bags.
