Environmental Education
For the tenth year, Holcim has sponsored the education and promotion of some of our most treasured and endangered species in New Zealand. This has been done through classroom “road shows” run by Tanya Jenkins from Environmental Education and Promotions, called ‘Earth’s Inheritance Programme’. Tanya has visited schools on the West Coast, in Christchurch and the Canterbury region. Her visits are endlessly popular with the children where she combines fun, and interactive learning with developing environmental responsibility.

The sessions have focused on some of our unique New Zealand species such as the Kiwi, Tuatara, Hector Dolphin, White Heron, NZ Fur Seal, Penguin, Black Petrel, Wekas, and Wetas. The children are taught about where they live, what makes them special, the problems they are facing, and how we can help ensure their survival. Other outstanding features of New Zealand's natural environment such as glaciers, forests, beaches, caves, animals, and sea life are also covered.

Tanya uses lots of interesting visuals with some bright and colourful displays, posters, leaflets, stickers, video footage, and information packs.

Other materials include teacher packs which have interesting follow up activities, and activity work booklets for students to complete at home. Students are also given a native tree seedling each to take home.

Holcim has been proud to be part of an environmental initiative which has meant hundreds of school children have been able to take part in this worthwhile programme at no cost. Holcim personnel have also played an active part in putting promotional material together, and ensuring Tanya has the resources to continue with this excellent programme.
