The entry period for the second Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, which promotes innovation in sustainable construction through a series of regional and global competitions, closed on 29 February 2007. Prizes at both levels total two million USD for each three-year competition cycle.
The competition was organised by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction is open to projects, irrespective of scale, which met five sustainability criteria.
Entries were completed online and to be eligible construction could not have commenced prior to 1 June 2007.
The Holcim Awards are held in partnership with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA; Tongji University, Shanghai, China; the University of São Paulo, Brazil and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, South Africa. The universities define the evaluation criteria of the competition and lead the independent juries.
Juries for both the regional and global phases of the competition include independent experts of international stature engaged in the sustainable development of society, building processes, construction materials, and building projects.
