Holcim Performance Cements (HPC™) are a family of blended cements manufactured by Holcim (US) Inc. to help meet the increasing performance demands, higher standards and specifications and environmental constraints being placed on today's construction industry. HPC™ is manufactured by intergrinding or interblending a pozzolan (typically fly ash) with Portland Cement clinker of Portland Cement.
HPC™ is designed to meet the strictest performance criteria.
The primary ingredients in HPC™ are Portland Cement clinker, fly ash and gypsum ground to a fine powder. Pozzolans typically include either a Class C or Class F fly ash at varying percentages by weight, depending on the specific performance criteria being addressed.
Fly ash is primarily silicate glass containing silica, alumina, lime and iron. Certain fly ashes exhibit both pozzolanic and cementitious properties.
A by-product of cement hydration is calcium hydroxide, which is water soluble. A big advantage to using fly ash in a blended cement is that a pozzolan will react with the calcium hydroxide to form other cementitious compounds, creating a more dense, durable concrete.
HPC™ is manufactured to meet the requirements of ASTM C 595, Standard Specifications for Blended Hydraulic Cements, and ASTM C 1157, Standard Performance Specifications for Blended Hydraulic Cements. HPC may be designed as moderate or high sulfate resistant, moderate or low heat of hydration or option R, low reactivity with alkali-reactive aggregates.
HPC™ is manufactured under controlled conditions to ensure consistent quality and uniformity. Holcim's tightly-controlled environment assures optimal proportions, chemistry and particle size distribution for the best possible performance.
