In March of 2006, Holcim (US) Inc. broke ground at the site of their new greenfield site in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri along the Mississippi River. Although situated on nearly 3,900 acres, the actual facility will be built and operated on approximately 1,700 acres, including the quarry and harbor areas. Approximately 2,200 acres is being preserved as conservation easement. This state-of-the art, environmentally-responsible cement plant will produce approximately 4 million metric tons of cement to meet growing US demand for a product which supports our critical infrastructure needs.
The plant will include a single kiln pyro processing line including a raw material processing system, coal mill system, product processing system and material receiving and produce shipping systems. The plant will have its own harbor on the Mississippi River and it will receive and ship more than 90 percent of the plant’s materials and products. This is beneficial because water transportation is one of the most energy, environmentally and economically efficient means to transport the finished product.
On December 22, 2006, the first two silos were completed at the Plant. These two 60-foot in diameter, 275-foot-tall, slip-formed raw meal silos were completed in just 16 days placing 6,015 yards of concrete. These two silos are the first two of 13 silos to be built in the next 18 months. The Plant is due to be completed in 2009.
