Lafarge expands in Mexico through cement

16 December 1999

Lafarge has acquired the Mexican cement producer Cemento Portland Blanco de Mexico (CPBM). The company manufactures gray cement, white cement, ready-mix concrete and mortars, mostly intended for Mexico's domestic market.

CPBM's production facility in the state of Hidalgo, situated roughly 70 km north of Mexico City, gives it production capacity of approximately 350,000 tonnes, including 80,000 tonnes of white cement. The company employs 250 people, and recorded sales of USD 25 million in 1998.

With a population of 100 million people, Mexico constitutes the second largest economy in Latin America. Its cement market has enjoyed constant growth since 1995, and currently stands at roughly 26 million tonnes. This operation demonstrates the desire of Lafarge, which already operates businesses in Mexico through its Roofing Division (clay roof tiles) and its Specialty Products Division (aluminous cements), to strengthen its local presence on a market with strong growth potential.

World leader in construction materials, the Lafarge Group employs 66,000 people in over 65 countries worldwide and has sales of FRF 64.3 billion (nearly 10 million euros).
