Lafarge selected for the Dow Jones sustainability group indexes

6 December 2000

The Lafarge Group has been selected to become a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Indexes of companies that are the most advanced in terms of sustainable development.

The world's first index founded on the principle of sustainable development, the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Indexes currently consists of 64 industrial groups. It rewards companies which, through their efforts to protect the environment, the quality of their initiatives in social policy and their respect for customers and suppliers, create value in the long term.

Bertrand Collomb, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, is delighted of this acknowledgement of Lafarge's efforts. "For some years, now, we have stated our desire to expand in the context of a strategy of sustainable development," he said. "This consists in industrial development which generate value, protects the environment, shows respect for people and their culture and conserves natural resources and energy."

World leader in construction materials, Lafarge employs 71,000 people in more than 70 countries. In 1999, the Group recorded sales of 10.5 billion euros. Since March 2000, Lafarge has been a founder member of WWF's "Conservation Partner" programme.
