New development for Lafarge in South America

11 May 1999

Lafarge Mortars, a business line of the Lafarge Group's Specialty Products division, has acquired the Argentine company Klaukol and is now one of the leaders on the country's mortars market.

Klaukol operates a production facility located roughly 30 kilometers from Buenos Aires. It employs 185 people and controls 45% of the mortars market. In 1998, the company generated sales of more than 32 million dollars (roughly 200 million French francs or 30 million euros).

This acquisition forms part of Lafarge Mortars' development strategy in South America. With the Qualimassa business in Brazil, developed some years ago, and the construction of a mortars plant in São Paulo (Brazil) which is now under way, Lafarge Mortars intends to establish a leading position in the region.

In January 1999, all Lafarge Group companies operating in the field of formulated products, coatings, adhesives and mortars in France and internationally united to create Lafarge Mortars. The business line already represents annual sales of more than FRF 2 billion (over 300 million euros).

World leader in construction materials, Lafarge employs 66,000 people in 65 countries and generates annual sales of FRF 64.3 billion (roughly 10 billion euros).
