SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Holcim is collaborating with our suppliers to design the packaging of tomorrow based on the three pillars of our packaging strategy: reduce, reuse and recycle.

We’re introducing sustainable packaging solutions to reduce the need for primary raw materials, ensure purchasing from responsible sources, and guarantee product quality during transportation and storage.

Holcim has launched the first global sustainable packaging ambition in our sector, demonstrating how sustainability drives profitability in line with our NextGen Growth 2030 strategy and helping build a nature-positive future.

This ambition will ensure that Holcim’s packaging meets the requirements of the European Union (EU) Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), while safeguarding the quality of our products during transportation and storage.

Taking a rigorous scientific approach, – using life cycle assessments to measure the environmental impact of its packaging, and working with our suppliers – we’ve set three new Group-wide 2030 targets based on the pillars of its packaging strategy:

  1. Reduce: Holcim will reduce the amount of packaging* by 10%. By optimizing designs, adopting new technologies, reducing pallets and plastic hoods.

  2. Reuse: Holcim will reuse 40% of the pallets transporting our bags. By recovering and refurbishing pallets and adopting reusable and refillable technologies.

  3. Recycle: Holcim bags and plastic hoods will comprise 20% recycled content. By designing them for recycling, increasing recycled content and ensuring that bags are collected and recycled.

By disclosing clear, transparent targets with our sustainable packaging ambition, we’re showing the way in our sector and inspiring our supplier partners to innovate with us and meet our sustainable sourcing framework.

Specific examples of innovative solutions include one-ply cement bags that use 20% less paper, bags with higher recycled content, mini cement silos that reduce the need for packaging by storing bulk cement, and cement “spreader trucks” that avoid single-use packaging.
