Lafarge becomes number one in German clay tile market

19 June 2000

Lafarge Braas Roofing, the Roofing Division of Lafarge, has acquired the majority of shares in Tonindustrie Heisterholz, the main manufacturer of clay roof tiles in Northern Germany. Lafarge Braas Roofing now becomes number one in the German clay tile market.

Lafarge Braas Roofing had already been a shareholder in Tonindustrie Heisterholz since 1984. Now the Bundeskartellamt has authorised Lafarge Braas Roofing to increase its participation in Tonindustrie Heisterholz.

In 1999, Tonindustrie Heisterholz annual sales were more than 50 million euros. The company has several production lines near Minden (Westphalia) and a newly built plant in Karstädt, located between Hamburg and Berlin.

It is planned to intensify the successful co-operation between Lafarge Braas Roofing's German clay tile manufacturer RuppKeramik and Tonindustrie Heisterholz. Both companies will cover the complete German market, as Tonindustrie Heisterholz is in Northwestern and Northeastern Germany, while RuppKeramik is strong in South, Central and Eastern Germany. RuppKeramik and Tonindustrie Heisterholz have also a perfect match in their product range and their innovative power. In a mid-term perspective, the aim is to merge both activities.

Lafarge Braas Roofing is active in 40 countries and holds leadership positions in most European countries, as well as significant activities in North America and growing ones in other countries. With some 12,000 employees and 233 sites worldwide it generated sales of 1.6 billion euros in 1999.

Lafarge, world leader in construction materials, holds leading positions in all its Divisions: Cement, Aggregates & Concrete, Roofing, Gypsum and Specialty Products. The Group employs 71,000 employees in 70 countries and generated sales of 10.5 billion euros in 1999.
