Holcim invests in Capsol to scale its advanced carbon capture technology

  • Investment in Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) technology for carbon capture to support Holcim’s decarbonization roadmap
  • Broadens Holcim’s wide range of decarbonization technologies

Holcim has invested in Capsol Technologies, a listed Norwegian company specializing in carbon capture technologies. Capsol’s post-combustion carbon capture and heat recovery system delivers superior efficiency with a proven and safe hot potassium carbonate solvent (HPC). HPC technology is a mature, energy-efficient chemical absorption process used to remove CO2 from gas streams, that is widely applicable in post-combustion carbon capture. As the leading partner for sustainable construction, Holcim aims to apply Capsol’s technology to further advance its decarbonization roadmap and drive profitable growth.

Ram Muthu, Head of Operational Excellence, Holcim: “By combining Holcim’s expertise in cement manufacturing and on-site carbon capture with Capsol’s safe and efficient technology, we have an additional lever to advance decarbonization and drive profitable growth. Through this strategic investment, we are one step closer to producing near-zero cement at scale to meet growing customer demand.”

Wendy Lam, CEO, Capsol: “Holcim is a leading provider of sustainable construction solutions and one of the largest cement producers in the world. They have bold ambitions of producing near-zero cement at scale for customers. Capsol wants to be part of realizing this ambition. Today, we are proud to share how we are deepening our collaboration, following a CapsolGo demonstration project at Holcim’s Dotternhausen plant in Germany in 2025. We look forward to further developing our relationship with Holcim and innovating together for the future.”

This investment broadens Holcim's wide range of decarbonization technologies, centered on its open innovation ecosystem. Holcim is assessing more than 500 startups annually through Holcim MAQER Ventures, its corporate venture capital unit. Holcim has made 19 investments to date through Holcim MAQER Ventures, and is constantly working towards scaling groundbreaking decarbonization technologies in the built environment.
