ECOPact builds Bogotá’s sustainable metro

Bogotá, Colombia. The country's dynamic capital, home to nearly 8 million people, is about to realize a decades-long dream: the construction of Line 1 of the Bogotá Metro. The project promotes sustainable mobility and uses Holcim's ECOPact low-carbon concrete, ECOPlanet low-carbon cement, aggregates and Tector Técnico mortar.

From 2028, driverless metro trains will be able to carry up to 72 000 passengers per hour in each direction over a distance of more than 20 kilometers in modern, electrically powered trains – with journeys from one end of the line to the other taking less than 30 minutes. All of this will contribute to the city’s sustainable development.

Sustainability is on track

For this key infrastructure project, Bogotá Metro Line 1 trusted Holcim to deliver. Not only are we the leading partner for sustainable construction in Colombia, we also stand out for our focus on sustainability and the development of innovative solutions.

So far we’ve supplied more than 39 000 tons of ECOPlanet cement and more than 100 000 m3 of ECOPact concrete to build 13 stations between the Bosa and Chapinero districts, helping minimize construction-related emissions by at least 30%.

From Holcim’s aggregates plant in Mondoñedo, we supplied 2 million m3 of soil subgrade materials for the rail yard in phase one of the metro’s construction. In August 2025, we started supplying Tector Técnico mortar, and are currently the exclusive supplier of leveling grout – for the supports between the precast and in-situ concrete elements of the metro’s structure.

Holcim’s Puente Aranda plant has supplied the concrete for the Bogotá Metro, and is certified for responsible sourcing throughout its supply chain by the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC). Additionally, two of our plants in Colombia operate with 100% renewable energy, derived from hydro and solar sources, and our truck fleet is becoming increasingly electric.

In Colombia, Holcim offers Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for all our cement and concrete products, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and sustainability.

Future Bogotá Metro network

Upon its completion in 2028, the first Metro line will be integrated into the future Bogotá Metro network, connecting the city's southwest with the center. In addition to alleviating traffic congestion and reducing emissions, the Metro will allow this growing city and its residents to enjoy the added benefits of an integrated transportation system.
