Bringing NextGen Growth to life in Serbia

DIMITRIJE KNJEGINJIĆ
CEO of Holcim Serbia

In March 2026 the Serbian government announced Serbia 2035, an ambitious plan to invest EUR 48 billion in infrastructure, energy and urbanization. As a result, the nation’s construction industry is set for strong growth, and since the plan prioritizes sustainable construction, Holcim is well positioned to support our customers in this dynamic and attractive market.

Dimitrije Knjeginjić tells us how his team is making NextGen Growth 2030 a reality, as we help build the infrastructure, industry and buildings of the future – meeting increased customer demand for our sustainable offering.

How are you bringing NextGen Growth 2030 to life?

Holcim Serbia has a proud 180+ year history, and we’ve never stood still. Today we’re executing our NextGen Growth 2030 strategy, harnessing innovation and sustainability for strong, profitable growth. We’re prioritizing our net-zero roadmap and setting the gold standard for operational excellence, to maintain our competitive edge and better serve our customers.

As sustainability drives profitable growth, half of cement and concrete sales in Serbia now come from ECOPlanet and ECOPact – our sustainable offering, and we’ve officially certified our bulk cement using Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), to verify its sustainability credentials.

We’re also investing both organically and strengthening our portfolio in Serbia through value-accretive M&A. For example, in 2025 we acquired Tribex, a market leader that will further accelerate our growth in aggregates, while complementing our cement and concrete operations.

Ultimately, everything comes back to our purpose as Holcim. Together with our partners, communities, and 470 employees across the country, I’m proud that Holcim Serbia stands at the forefront of sustainable construction – building progress for people and the planet.

What are some of Holcim Serbia’s most iconic projects?

For decades, we’ve supplied materials to support the country’s most significant infrastructure and urban projects – from strategic transport corridors and industrial complexes to some of Belgrade’s most recognizable icons, including the Avala Tower and the Ada Bridge.

Here are two more I’m really proud of. The Belgrade Waterfront and the Ložionica projects have reshaped Belgrade’s skyline and infused the city with a bold, futuristic identity. This work is a testament to Holcim’s industrial capability, and our reliability, quality and technical expertise.

Today, we continue to support Serbia’s most ambitious infrastructure projects with our sustainable building solutions, for construction projects linked to EXPO 2027 Belgrade, as well as the new National Stadium and the Belgrade Metro.

At the same team, our Holcim Serbia team works to strengthen communities by reconstructing and modernizing essential public institutions like healthcare centers, clinics and kindergartens in the communities where we operate. We’re also partnering with schools and NGOs like the Red Cross to invest in knowledge and youth empowerment, while focusing on talent development.

How is sustainability driving profitable growth?

At Holcim Serbia, we’re investing in advanced technologies, energy efficiency and circular construction, while strengthening economic resilience at the local level. Sustainability is a means of creating value for all our stakeholders.

Speaking to our teams across Serbia on a daily basis, it’s clear to me that “sustainability driving profitable growth” is a NextGen Growth 2030 driver that we all live and breathe. It energizes all of us across the country in our work.

We’re constantly upgrading our facilities with state-of-the-art solutions to further drive circularity, as well as building new ones.

For example, our Technology Park near Belgrade will be a state-of-the-art grinding and mixing station to reuse and produce building materials for Serbia’s roads, bridges and houses of the future. This new facility will recycle and use regional fly ash, gypsum and slag, enabling the responsible reuse of materials that are currently now sent to landfill.

Through circular construction we’re replacing clinker – created through an energy-intensive process whereby limestone is superheated with clay – in cement with recycled inputs such as fly ash and slag, as well as construction demolition materials and innovative and natural substitutes.

In 2026, we began recycling CDM into new, high-value building solutions, and thanks to our ECOCycle technology, Holcim is the first company in Serbia to introduce cement formulated with construction demolition materials (CDM).

By building cities from cities, we’re reducing emissions, saving valuable primary materials and minimizing waste, while sustainability drives profitable growth.

In our operations, Holcim Serbia is also reducing the amount of industrial and municipal waste that is sent to landfill, by using it to scale solutions that provide us with alternative fuels.

Tell us about Holcim Serbia’s winning team

In Serbia, everything we do is guided by the Holcim Spirit of Purpose, People and Performance, which gives us the culture we need to unlock NextGen Growth 2030. Combining performance excellence and growth, we have a deep commitment to building progress.

At the same time, Health and Safety stands as an uncompromising priority at Holcim Serbia, embedded in every process and decision. This reflects our deep commitment to protecting our people, partners, and communities.

Ultimately, I want Holcim Serbia to continue to be known as a company that leads in business performance including sustainability, as well as transparency – to strengthen our brand equity, inspire investor confidence and make us even more attractive as an employer.

In this respect, we’ve already been highly successful. Recent awards we’ve won include PwC Serbia’s ESG Award for Leadership in Circular Economy and Sustainable Business Practices, as well as a Regional Silver Award for Environmental Protection.

Both these accolades prove that Holcim Serbia is delivering operational excellence, advancing a purpose-led vision of growth, and creating long-term value for our people, customers and shareholders – now and for generations to come. I feel honored to lead our teams here.
