Climate action at Holcim

Climate action is at the core of Holcim’s strategy to become a net zero company. With today’s growing population and rising urbanization, the construction sector is essential to build a net-zero future. At Holcim, we are at the forefront of decarbonizing building across its entire lifecycle to build better with less, from our own operations to low carbon construction, all the way to energy-efficient buildings in use. Taking a rigorous, science-driven approach on this journey, we partnered with the SBTi to launch our industry’s first 1.5°C-aligned framework and have submitted our 2030 net-zero revised targets accordingly.

1.5°C science-based targets

Taking a science-driven approach to our climate action, at Holcim we worked with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to validate our net zero roadmap with 2030 and 2050 targets covering Scope 1, 2 and 3. To ensure our targets are in line with the latest science available, at New York Climate Week 2022, we announced the launch of the world’s first 1.5°C science-based framework to decarbonize the cement industry. This framework was independently developed by the SBTi, in collaboration with an Expert Advisory Group representing academia, civil society and industry, to decarbonize cement in a rigorous and science-driven way. We have submitted our 1.5°C-aligned 2030 targets for SBTi validation, and are engaging with like-minded organizations to scale up the framework’s deployment.

Climate action at the core of our strategy

Climate action is at the core of our "Strategy 2025 - Accelerating Green Growth".

With our 70,000 people around the world, we are working to decarbonize building across its full lifecycle at scale. Our strategic approach is holistic, from rethinking every part of our operations to cut our emissions; to developing new green materials and solutions to help our customers build better with less; empowering building users to live in more sustainable buildings that are more energy-efficient; and making the whole system circular by keeping materials in use in a closed loop.

Climate report 2022

In line with our commitment to lead our sector’s transition to net zero, we’ve published our first Climate Report. The report details how we will reach our 2030 and 2050 net zero targets, and real-world examples of how we are helping build greener cities.

Decarbonizing building end to end

Green operations: decarbonizing Holcim

We are decarbonizing Holcim with green operations, from green energy and mobility to green product formulation, all the way to next generation technologies like carbon capture usage and storage. Our goal is to operate at least one net-zero plant by 2030. Many of our sites are in the race to get there. For instance, in countries like Austria and Czech Republic, we operate with close to 100% alternative fuels.

Building better with less: decarbonizing construction

We are decarbonizing construction, enabling our customers to build better with less. Our low-carbon materials, from ECOPact green concrete to ECOPlanet green cement, deliver 100% performance with up to 90% less CO2. We are also deploying smart design systems like 3D printing that can reduce material use by up to 50%.

Sustainable buildings in use: decarbonizing cities

We are making buildings more sustainable in use, decarbonizing our cities. Our broad range of solutions, from roofing to insulation, is driving energy efficiency and green retrofitting. This is where the majority of our sector’s emissions are generated, with 70% of the CO2 emissions in construction coming from buildings in use. We’re expanding our solutions to reduce this footprint.

Circular construction: building new from old

We are driving circular construction to build new from the old, as a world leader in recycling. Our goal is to double down in this area, going from recycling over 50M tons of materials today to 100M tons by 2030. We are putting circularity at the core of everything we do, from recycling construction and demolition waste to upcycling plastic bags in roofing systems.
