Elevating roofing with Holcim

In just two years Holcim has built a USD 4 billion platform in the most attractive USD 40 billion North America market, led by Elevate in the commercial segment and Malarkey in residential.

With ongoing expansion in Latin America and the recent acquisition of FDT in Germany, we’re leveraging our global strength to reach a wide range of markets.

Ever-growing roofing market

Roofing is a unique and attractive business. It is innovation-, sustainability- and brand-driven, offering significant advantages to the market’s strongest players.

The market in flat roofing is growing especially fast, driven by the need for waterproofing, energy efficiency and more.

Let’s take a closer look at what our roofing systems can do.

Roofing for energy efficiency

Insulating roofs

High-quality roofs can improve a building’s energy efficiency and thermal comfort for occupants.

Holcim’s Elevate ISOGARD™ boards provide the highest thermal insulation in the US market, up to 40% above standard competing solutions. To maximize energy efficiency gains for its customers, all of Elevate’s US production lines have shifted to ISOGARD.

Duro-Guard is a comprehensive range of thermal roofing insulation systems that improve energy efficiency and reduce heat loss.

Cool roofs

Cool roofs reflect more sunlight than conventional roofs. They keep buildings and cities cooler, reducing the need for air conditioning and mitigating the heat island effect. This results in less energy use and lower energy bills.

The white Duro-Last membrane has a total solar emittance of up to 87%. This ENERGY STAR qualified membrane also releases energy and heat efficiently, greatly reducing energy costs.

Malarkey Roofing shingles offer their own technology to reflect 20%-25% of the sun’s energy.

Solar-enabling roofs

Holcim offers a range of solar-enabling roofing systems, including Elevate’s EPDM and TPO roofing membranes, that enable all types of solar installations for flat and low slope roofs.

Solar panels for pitched roofs require shingles that can handle the extra burden of the panels themselves as well as the installation process. Malarkey's NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt shingles are designed to enable solar roofs by delivering up to 30% greater strength and 65% greater granule adhesion than the industry standard.

Roofing for greener and healthier cities

A roof with a garden is not only aesthetically pleasing, it also controls temperature and combats the urban heat island effect. It enhances stormwater management, and helps bring more nature into cities.

These oases of nature are often enabled by green (or ‘vegetative’) roofs.

Elevate’s SkyScape™ Vegetative Roofing Systems are designed to encourage plant growth and come in two styles: pregrown modular and built-in-place. Many of Malarkey’s products are used beneath seed trays on green roofs because a secure, watertight roof is the primary foundation for any of these systems.

To address the related problem of air pollution, Malarkey launched the world’s first smog-reducing shingle in 2018. The smog-reducing granules, integrated into Malarkey roofing shingles, remove smog gasses from the air with the same effect as trees by using sunlight to photocatalytically convert smog into water-soluble ions. By the end of 2022, Malarkey “planted” the equivalent of over 1 million trees thanks to this groundbreaking technology.

Roofing for circularity

With its highly circular business model, Malarkey has been a pioneer in upcycling plastic and rubber in shingles, employing everything from plastic bags to wax pellets made from used children’s plastic markers. An average Malarkey roof contains more than 3,000 upcycled plastic bags inside. In just a few years, Malarkey has diverted close to 4 billion plastic bags from landfill.

Duro-Last takes back old roofs through its award-winning “Take Back Program” and recycles them into a variety of new, complementary roofing accessories and commercial and industrial flooring materials.
