Plants of Tomorrow

The four-year “Plants of Tomorrow” Initiative is one of the largest roll-outs of Industry 4.0 technologies in the building materials industry. It targets a global network of over 270 integrated cement plants and grinding stations across more than 50 countries and utilizes automation technologies and robotics, artificial intelligence, predictive maintenance and digital twin technologies for the entire production process.

Industry 4.0 is a reality at our plants.

30 pilot projects across all regions.

15-20% operational efficiency gains.

Plants of Tomorrow puts Industry 4.0 into practice

We're looking ahead to future-proof our operations. A traditional industry such as cement manufacture has many benefits to reap from technological advancement, in terms of efficiency, health and safety practices, and improved customer service among much more.

A “Plants of Tomorrow” certified operation will show 15-20% of operational efficiency gains compared to a conventional cement plant. We are currently running over 30 pilot projects covering all regions in which we operate is active. The Siggenthal, Switzerland, integrated cement plant will be the pilot for the global “Plants of Tomorrow” initiative.

Building a more efficient future

  • Predictive operations that can detect abnormal conditions and process anomalies in real-time, reducing maintenence and energy costs and optimize training opportunities.
  • Automation and robotics, such as unmanned vehicles and equipment for high-exposure surveillance will increase safety for employees by inspecting confined spaces. The concept is now being rolled out to several markets including Switzerland, France, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, India and Russia.
  • New PACT (Performance and Collaboration) digital tool allows for data-centric operational decision making.
