Shifting gears: Driving electric mobility at Holcim

“By implementing these measures all around the world, and encouraging our customers and suppliers to do the same, we aim to reduce Scope 3 downstream transportation emissions per ton of material transported by 24.3% by 2030 compared to 2020,” Eugenia says.

Here are some examples of how we’re accelerating the shift to electric mobility worldwide:

Emissions-free transit in Austria

In collaboration with Silo Riedel, we’ve launched Austria's first fully electric truck for cement transport, as part of our strategy to electrify 80% of its cement transports in Austria by 2030 and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. The electric truck operates emissions-free using certified green electricity.

Trialing electric dumpers in Poland
 

Poland, we’ve launched trials of an innovative electric quarry dumper, and are the first company in the country to do so. At our Małogoszcz quarry, two electric haul trucks are in operation, while at the Dolomite Quarry in Radkowice, our gravel pit in Sępólno and the Kraków plant we have deployed electric wheel loaders.

Serving an iconic Swiss tunnel project
 

To construct Switzerland’s iconic second Gotthard Tunnel, 100% of all our cement deliveries are being made by electric trucks or train. To date, we’ve delivered 100,000 tons of cement for this monumental project in a sustainable way.

Electric wheel loaders in the UK
 

In a European first, Holcim UK (formerly Aggregate Industries UK) were the first to implement electric powered wheel loaders, which joined its fleet alongside London’s first all-electric readymix concrete mixer truck. We now have almost 20 electric wheel loaders operating in eight countries.

Sustainable waste collection in Greece
 

Geocycle Greece recently introduced its first electric waste collection truck at Athens International Airport. With zero emissions and a range of up to 330 km, the vehicle reflects our commitment to innovation and the circular economy, supporting the daily collection and transfer of recyclables to Geocycle’s Koropi recycling facility.

Algeria’s first female truck driver is electric
 

In Algeria, the nation's first female truck driver, trained through our Women on Wheels program, is now driving the country’s first 100% electric truck. Advantages include zero CO₂ emissions, reduced noise and environmental pollution, easier maintenance and enhanced durability.

Mexico pioneers electric mobility
 

With our regional Green Mobility strategy in Latin America, Holcim has set the ambitious goal of having more than 300 units of electric or hybrid equipment in our fleet by 2025. In 2025, Mexico is leading the way with nine electric ready-mix mixers, four electric front loaders, two electric quarry dumpers, one electric truck for bulk cement logistics, 34 electric cars, 26 hybrid cars, and 81 electric forklifts.

Ecuador deploys passenger vehicles
 

Holcim Ecuador has 24 electric and 51 hybrid passenger vehicles for its commercial and operations teams, whilst the country’s heavy vehicle fleet now includes two electric front loaders for Geocycle and five electric quarry dumpers.

Electric laboratory vehicles in Colombia
 

In Colombia, we have one electric laboratory vehicle, four electric quarry dumpers, and five electric ready-mix mixers in operation. Argentina’s fleet includes six hybrid cars for commercial teams and one quarry dumper. Holcim Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua are also introducing more electric units to their respective fleets, while Holcim was the first company to introduce electric quarry dumpers in Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia and El Salvador.

Australia hauls with hydrogen
 

In 2024, we announced an agreement with Putzmeister Oceania to trial the first Australian Design Rules (ADRs) approved and road registered 100% electric concrete truck mixer in Australia. To transport quarry materials from the Pilbara region to concrete batching plants, Holcim Australia has retrofitted two Scania V8 diesel “prime mover” trucks with “hydrogen on demand” units to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% and significantly reduce emissions.
