France: new beaches in Provence

2 November 2010

LafargeHolcim has delivered a total of more than 4,000 tons of various materials (aggregate, sand, blocks and river stones) for the rehabilitation of the beaches in Marseille and Istres, in south-east France.

As well as the rehabilitation of the rocky coast and several beaches, river stones and blocks were also used to line a dam. In the city of Istres, 2 beaches were recreated naturally using sand from Sénas, identical to that found on beaches in the Camargue.

The deliveries were made between May and June 2010 by truck and by barge when possible, in order to reduce CO2 emissions. A waste removal service has also been set up to avoid an increase in the number of trucks on roads, using a double freight system.
