With our Ductal® concrete, Chillon viaducts will connect the cities for long

After 45 years of service, the Chillon viaducts (Switzerland) get a makeover. Reinforced and sealed with LafargeHolcim’s ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) Ductal®, the bridges, the jewels of the Swiss motorway network, will continue to connect cities for a long time, between France and Switzerland.


Chillon viaducts are some of the most spectacular structures of the Swiss motorway network. Their two independent 12-meter-wide lanes, stretching over 2,150 m and peaking at 100m above the lake level, offer stunning panoramic views overlooking the shores of Lake Geneva.

They are used to connect by road the French cities of the Rhône-Alpes region and cities of south-western Switzerland, in a busy area (50,000 vehicles per day on average).

Opened to traffic in 1969, the two viaducts were beginning to deteriorate. After a first phase of works in 2012, a new site has been launched for 2014-2015 to renovate roads and extend the life of bridge decks.

More resistant and watertight decks with LafargeHolcim's UHPC Ductal®

It's Ductal®, LafargeHolcim’s fiber concrete ultra-high performance (UHPC), which was selected for this operation. Used as a 4.5 cm-thick layer featuring rebars, our UHPC allows:

  • increasing the strength and tightness of deck slabs.
  • improving the overall structural behavior of the deck: the new generation tiles, indeed, increase by 60% the capacity to absorb the forces, compared to a conventional concrete slab.

To save time, reduce storage and ensure good hygiene and safety on site, our Ductal® concrete is mixed in a batching plant. And thanks to a special formulation allowing a controlled flow, it may also be cast hillside, with a degree of tilt up to 7 %.
